A Prayer for Healing

A prayer for healing is a powerful way to help. Here's a reminder of just how powerful your caring heart is: prayers heal.

Most people who pray know this. And for those who don't, scientific evidence shows it is true:

  • Larry Dossey, an American medical doctor, studied research on prayer. He wrote books on their healing power.
  • Dr. Masaru Emoto, a Japanese scientist, studied the effects of healing thoughts on water.
  • Targ and Sicher in the Mid Atlantic Heart Institute study (MAHI study) discovered that denomination and the kind of prayer prayed doesn't matter "so long as you held an intention for the patient to heal. Calling on Spider Woman, a healing grandmother star figure common in the Native American culture, was every bit as successful as calling on Jesus."

There are a variety of prayers for healing from many traditions and spiritual paths. Helping another is unique to every person alive.

What is known is this: the specific prayer for healing that works is invoked by an caring heart that holds the intention for a person, plant, place or group to heal.

What does healing mean?

“Heal” comes from the Anglo-Saxon word haelan. Haelan comes from the word hal. Hal means “whole”.

Heal is defined as:**

  1. to make sound, well, or healthy again; restore to health
  2. to cure or get rid of (a disease); restore (a wound, sore, etc) to a healthy condition.
  3. to free from grief, troubles, evil, etc.
  4. (a) to remedy or get rid of (grief, troubles, etc.); (b) to make up (a breach, differences, etc.); reconcile.

"Heal" is used to apply to more than just the physical aspect of healing. It encompasses the emotional, mental and spiritual health, too. It is used for the person as a whole.

In our American culture, healing is often thought of as curing. While curing and healing are synonyms to each other, the root word of cure is "care" not the cessation of all symptoms. Here's the definition of cure:**

  1. a healing; the act of healing; restoration to health
  2. a remedy; that which makes one well
  3. a system or method of medical treatment.
  4. the care of souls, spiritual charge, curacy.

Whichever healing prayers you say, a prayer that has an intention to heal engages a great mystery. It moves through for the benefit of the person, plant, place or group being prayed for. Larry Dossey says "We are obliged, especially in a multicultural society, to broaden our definition of what prayer should be," he said, preferring to define it as "communication with the Absolute."

Maybe a prayer for healing helps because it's open ended. It asks for nothing specifically but rather empowers the recipient of the prayer to receive what's important for his or her own personal healing journey, situation, or experience.

The power of prayer remains a great mystery but the healing effects of prayer are well known.

Prayers for Healing

A prayer for healing water by Dr. Masaru Emoto
I'm beginning with the work of Dr. Masuru Emoto. From his research on literally healing and transforming polluted water using prayer, he learned that water responds and will heal when spoken to kindly.

Below is his prayer for healing the waters of the Gulf and its surroundings written by Dr. Emoto on May 9, 2010.

"Now let's give energy of love and gratitude to all the living creatures in Mexico Gulf by praying like this: To whales, dolphins, pelicans, fishes, shellfishes, planktons, corals, algae and all creatures in Gulf of Mexico I am sorry.
Please forgive me.
Thank you.
I love you."

Christian prayer for healing
The Holy Mother, Mary, is the Divine Feminine aspect of God. The world over, devotees of ask and pray to Mother Mary for help. Here are three versions:

Hail Mary from the Church Universal and Triumphant
Hail, Mary, full of grace
the Lord is with thee.
Blessed art thou among women
And blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
Holy Mary, Mother of God,
Pray for us, sons and daughters of God,
Now and at the hour of our victory
Over sin, disease and death.

Hail Mary in the Catholic faith
Traditional form:
Hail, Mary, full of grace the Lord is with thee.
Blessed art thou among women
And blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners,
Now and at the hour of our death.

Contemporary form:
Hail Mary, full of grace Our Lord is with you.
Blessed are you among women,
and blessed is the fruit of your womb, Jesus.
Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners,
Now and at the hour of our death.

A Traditional Irish Blessing
May the blessing of light be on you, light without and light within. May the blessed sunshine shine on you and warm your heart till it glows like a great peat fire, so that the stranger may come and warm himself at it, and also a friend.

And may the light shine out of the two eyes of you, like a candle set in the two windows of a house, bidding the wanderer come in out of the storm; and may the blessings of the rain be on you-the soft, sweet rain. May it fall upon your spirit so that all the little flowers may spring up and shed their sweetness on the air. And may the blessings of the Great Rains be on you, may they beat upon your spirit and wash it fair and clean, and leave there many a shining pool where the blue of heaven shines, and sometimes a star.

And may the blessing of the Earth be on you - the great round earth; may you ever have a kindly greeting for those you pass as you're going along the roads. May the earth be soft under you when you rest upon it, tired at the end of a day, and may it rest easy over you when at the last, you lay out under it; may it rest so lightly over you that your soul may be off from under it quickly and up and off, and on its way to God. And now may the Lord bless you all and bless you kindly.
